DeepSync develops novel deep learning architectures inspired by oscillatory synchronization in the brain. While current AI models rely on static networks, biological brains employ rich temporal dynamics — oscillations that coordinate information processing across neural ensembles. DeepSync transfers these principles to artificial neural networks, creating models that better capture temporal dependencies, more robustly integrate multimodal information, and whose internal representations are more interpretable. The project comprises three interconnected sub-projects: development of new oscillation-based architectures for sequential and multimodal data (SP1, Geiger); application to clinical and neuroscientific questions, particularly detection and prediction of epileptic seizures from EEG and intracranial recordings (SP2, Liebe); and systematic analysis of trained models using dynamical systems theory and neuroscientific data analysis methods (SP3, Macke).
